Review of Gladiator (2000) by Stephen Z — 07 Feb 2015
In an age where Hollywood bombards us with films about Greek myths and Roman heroes, most of them flop. But a select few rise to the challenge and become hits. "Gladiator", a story about a Roman soldier turned gladiator, is one of those select few.
One of the great strengths of "Gladiator" is its great balance of drama and action. There are some awesome fights with well-done choreography. But at the same time this film has a great story, filled with betrayal, revenge, and beautiful character development. However, I will admit that the ending is disappointingly predictable. If you've seen an action movie, you probably know how this film will end.
Another great aspect of "Gladiator" is the great performances of Russell Crowe and Joaquin Phoenix. Russell Crowe's performance as Maximus feels natural and authentic. He fills the role excellently. Joaquin Phoenix really captures the greed and arrogance of a prince who inherits the throne. He makes for a great antagonist.
Though it may start out slow, once things pick up, "Gladiator" turns out to be an exciting film that will keep you hooked. Ridley Scott has brilliantly created a film that pays great homage to Roman culture and the Roman values of honor and bravery.
