Review of Gladiator (1992) by Bryce I — 10 Dec 2013
A grand sweeping epic, Gladiator, at times becomes too wrapped up in its own importance. Overall it's still an entertaining way to spend three hours. The production design is fabulous, but the performances are a tad uneven. Joaquin Phoenix is utterly creepy, almost too much to the point of unwatchable and Russell Crowe does Russell Crowe although with a tad more polish and pretension then usual.
Gladiator is not a bad film, but it's missing that something that elevates a film beyond a collection of disparate elements.
