Review of Give 'em Hell, Malone (2009) by Scott T — 06 Aug 2011
Really enjoyed this low budget comic book/action movie/noire combo. Thomas Jane is perfect as the trigger happy gumshoe that is 'damn hard to kill.' It's great to see Ving Rhames back to his bad ass best as well, he's great in this.
The baddies are all predictably bad, the twists sign-posted and the pacing super fast. The tongue in cheek, razor sharp one-liners are great, Tom Jane's dialogue is at times is brilliant as the film wanders between the 50's and the modern day (I'm still not sure which era its supposed to be in, my guess would be the 50's).
He constantly talks about dames, booze and dying. Doug Hutchison is cracking as the sadistic henchman - Matchstick, as you can guess by his name he really shouldn't play with fire and is partially forgiven by me for nearly single handedly ruining the last Punisher movie (although a fair few people would say that film was bad enough anyway).
Elsa Pataky is stunning and the movie is a thrill a minute late nice special. Perfect beer and pizza movie if you don't expect Chinatown and its way better than The Spirit for about a tenth of the budget.
