Review of Girls Will Be Girls (2003) by Aston M — 17 Apr 2004
Written and Directed by Richard Day.
Genre: Comedy/Romance.
MPAA: Rated R for sexuality, language and drug content.
Runtime: 79 minutes.
Plot Summary: Three actresses at various places on the Hollywood food chain navigate the minefield of love, aging, and ambition. Oh, and they're all played by men! - IMDB.
So this movie is pretty sexist - an anti-women satire. The 3 main roles are female characters played by men, and they aren't even supposed to be in drag. They are just actors cast in female roles. It plays like a trashy John Waters film: they have sex with clothes on, over-the-top characters, etc. But the actors in the film do an amazing job of portraying women. They get across the abnormal complexities and subtle manorisms of stereotypical women. They over-react. They cry, whine, scream...I should stop now. But you know what I mean. And there is some weird nudity in it too. Don't wanna give too much away, but I found this film to be quite funny. "Morphine is the pizza of drugs." - just a funny part of the film.
