Review of Girlfriend Experience (2008) by Matthew W — 29 Nov 2009
Love it. It's shot in ambient light, everywhere, gloriously underexposed throughout, apart from one or two scenes. There are some wonderful fixed camera single takes and one with a dizzyingly slow zoom-in - beautiful. I thoroughly enjoyed the non linear narrative and disjointed sound editing, which ensured we were hearing the dialogue of a different scene over the one we were watching. As a film, it's great.
I can only guess that critics who are not happy with the film are looking at the content (financial crisis / presidential elections) too much. When you have underexposed seedy hotels and restaurants and camera shots set up with this much mastery, should you really be whining about the script and the acting?
