Review of Girlfriend Experience (2008) by Julian T — 22 Jun 2010
I won't lie and say the movie "moves" me, because it doesn't. There's too much seemingly needless fragmentation in the timeline for that to be the case. The acting rarely requires more than an attitude of apathy or frustration. The dialogue rarely peeks my intellectual curiosity.
But an intangible force drew me into the film from start to finish. Maybe it was the concept; an unobstructed (thanks to sure-handed direction) window into a unique life. Some of the conversations she has about her life are interesting largely because it's such unfamiliar territory for the bulk of us. It's not like none of us can relate to anything in the movie, because we can; it's just that part of this film's entertainment value, in my opinion, comes from a voyeuristic quality we don't get in most other films. I won't deny its art direction and overall visual appeal, either.
