Review of Girlfriend Experience (2008) by Zoe R — 10 Jul 2010
This film has everything visually. The photography throughout is unsystematic and beautiful, the shot selection and directing style is also refreshingly experimental.
What this Steven Soderbergh drama doesn't provide is emotion.
The characters and narrative together don't build up enough real emotion for us to indentify with anyone in the film. The result of this is more like having an insight into random events throughout complete stranger's lives. Where time isn't an issue and you can witness all their endeavours and their consequences. The problem is you don't really care about the characters, making this film shockingly easy to lose interest in.
Watch The GirlFriend Experience for art, not for entertainment.
