Review of Girlfriend Experience (2008) by Ville H — 08 Dec 2010
Who said porn stars can't act in mainstream films with acclaimed directors? I did. But now I've changed my mind. Sasha Grey does a good job at showing us a character that has a more professional outlook on sex than a porn star does, which is obviously interesting given her profession. As an escort, her character has a profession that is socially seen as sleazy, but, unlike a porn star, she is placed in a very un-sleazy environment. The majority of her clients are wealthy and upper-class, and they talk endlessly about the government and the economy. She doesn't ignore them or pretend to care - she shows a sort of genuine interest in what they are saying.
What I liked most about this film was a scene where a man tells her that she could be more than just an escort. He isn't just making small talk. He is honest, and so was Soderbergh. By casting Grey, Soderbergh told her that she could be more than just a porn star. An now she definitely is.
