Review of Girlfight (2000) by Jason R — 07 Jul 2008
It won some prestigious prizes, including the Sundance Film Award. But prizes from any film or awards institute couldn't show the inner award u will feel when u see this film. It might look like a "coming of age story", or a "rags to riches story", or another "underdog story", but it exceeds that.
Girlfight is a film about trying to live with urself in a world and place that neither excepts u or treats u fairly. Michelle Rodriguez is captivating in her role because u are convinced with her performance and her presentation, and that her character is all those things, and that she is alone in her fight against the world.
Over the course of the film we begin to see her come out her shell in a convincing way and not just because in some point in the film it has to happen, but because u see her archetype blossom into what she wants to become.
Poweful acting and a powerful script keeps the stamina up in this production, and after watching the film u discover a real love for independent films.
