Review of Girl with a Pearl Earring (2003) by Sarah D — 15 May 2009
This is a wonderful movie of the unrequited and forbidden love between a master and his servant. It's a quiet movie with little happening in it because the film is about things not said, opportunities not taken and lips not kissed. Colin Firth and Scarlett Johansson have excellent chemistry and are amazing in their roles of two individuals who share a bond which they don't have with anyone else in the world.
I love the final shot of the film which is a zoom out of the original Girl with a Pearl Earring painting, which continues to evoke intrigue, curiosity and our imaginations (Who is that girl? What was her relationship with Vermeer?) Resulting in the acclaimed novel of the same name and this wonderful film!
