Review of Girl with a Pearl Earring (2003) by Peter W — 17 May 2008
This is something rare. A very good film about a painter. Jan Vermeer paints one of his most famous works, the servant girl with a pearl earring, here played perfect by Scarlett Johansson. Vermeer´s genre-painting is captured beautifully.
The work´s progress is shown and the conditions of work. The camera obscura, I think, links the 17th century with the mid-19th century and the art of photography. It is no surprise that Vermeer was rediscovered at this time, with the photographic quality that comes one to mind.
Another very good painterfilm is a relatively unknown German film about the romantic Caspar David Friedrich. In this film we never see the artist, only his paintings and the people surrounding it.
