Review of Girl with a Pearl Earring (2003) by Stephen L — 05 Feb 2009
The action is very quiet, delicate and subdued for most of the movie. I think this is interesting because the majority of historical fiction has overinflated drama. The feel of this movie seems more genuine to true life.
There wasn't even any death at all or any extreme anguish till the end. The acting's good. The character of Griet has this bewildered look on her face through the whole movie, like she's constantly out of her element.
Vermeer always has a look of being torn between two or more ideals, duties, etc. through the whole thing. The reason why I can't say this is a perfect movie is that I can't help feel it's a little anticlimactic.
Some things just aren't given the development they need. The cinematography's fantastic though.
