Review of Girl with a Pearl Earring (2003) by Sarah S — 07 Feb 2009
It is 1660 in the Netherlands, and 16 year old Griet has been sent by her poverty-stricken parents to find work as a servant in the home of an artist and his family. Little does Griet know however, that she will become the subject of one of the most famous and finest paintings in the world.
'Girl with a Pearl Earring' is a fictional account about the Dutch portrait baring the same name, painted by Johannes Vermeer. Although the events that occur are mainly imagined, they still bare a great realistic quality and emotional impact.
The characters of Griet and Vermeer in particular are whole, compelling and at times almost poetic. The film itself actually has a very portrait-like quality about it. This is mainly due to the splendid cinematography and lighting choice that director Peter Webber employs.
His choice of score and of silence also help to establish a beautifully romantic atmosphere that brims with quiet enchantment. A patient and gentle love-story, 'Girl With a Pearl Earring' is sure to please any avid period drama fan.
Beautiful.
