Review of Girl with a Pearl Earring (2003) by Melissa S — 03 Oct 2010
Peter Webber makes this one of the most authentic feeling movies I can remember. A very understated relationship between Johansson and Firth. Johansson a protestant and Firth and his patron Wilkinson are less reserved.
Johansson develops an interest in Firth work and eventually make input on his paintings though their relationship stay platonic, there is an air of being tainted by working around a painter. Jahansson finally agrees to be a subject for one of his painting (for wilkinson's private collection) that will never be shown.
The jacket overstates the level of overt sexuallity in the movie. Its all period accurate where public implication of sexuality is not tolerated, but real sexuality is all around you. If you enjoy contemplating a work of art this may be for you otherwise its a pass.
