Review of Girl, Interrupted (1999) by Tyler B — 20 Jun 2014
"Was I ever crazy? Maybe. Or maybe life is...".
Based on writer Susanna Kaysen's account of her 18 month stay at a mental hospital diagnosed with "Borderline Personality Disorder". While she stays she bonds with several patients and becomes particularly close with Lisa Rowe played by Angelina Jolie diagnosed as a "sociopath" I considered her character bipolar as well.
Review: I'm really quite surprised by the negative reviews from the critics, seeing what they found distracting and just awful leaves me to wonder if they watched the same movie I did. This is a great film and it really shows what mental illness can do to you and what it is like in a mental, sanity truly is a fragile thing. The film has an interesting and engaging plot supported by nothing less than solid performances by the entire cast, Winona Ryder, Angelina Jolie, Brittney Murphy, Whoopi Goldberg and Jeffery Tambor were stunning. It balances the drama and comedy decently well. The ending was intense perhaps a tad rocky but wasn't anything I found truly distracting or anything that ruins the movie all together. I have to say what was truly enjoyable of this film was SPOILERS START HERE, watching Lisa, the manipulative sociopath being unpredictable and using everyone in the hospital for her own twisted use. I also loved how self aware she was, she knows shes sick, she knows she's just this bad person yet brutally honest. And in the end she changes and its quite heart warming to see this just all around evil character change so drastically. SPOILERS END HERE!
All in all.. this movie is great and I highly recommend it to everyone.
