Review of Ginger Snaps (2000) by Tee B — 02 Sep 2013
Hands down, the best werefolf movie I've ever seen, but of course to say that is all this movie is about is over simplifying. Women in real monster movies rarely are allowed to play a significant, intelligent roll.
I found it all enthralling and relatable...sometimes literally and sometimes (perhaps more often) metaphorically. The latent puberty, the penchant for the dark and macabre in their art and their sister-created universe.
I found the stage of school and teenage challenges an apt and truly 'horrific' time of life in which to develop a very psychologically and socially charged film. The satirical slant only adds to the strange unreality feel of the film, instead of lessening the impact of more profound points that are quite clear.
I also loved the juxtaposition of mother and daughters. For me it truly helped illustrate how very stupid parents do seem when you are bridging the gap (especially if its in a dark manner) between childhood and adulthood.
Growing up is anything but graceful and kind. It, simply put...is a bloody horror.
