Review of Ginger Snaps (2000) by Lori D — 06 Dec 2011
A top notch werewolf movie, but becomes much more than that. It becomes a story about coming of age, feminism, and individuality.
Great performances from the cast, highlighted by Perkins and Isabelle. I also have to mention Lemche, who I always enjoy. Clever storytelling echos to several other films, including 'The Fly' and of course, 'American Werewolf in London'. A slow transformation allows director Fawcett to get the most out of his tiny budget.
What makes this movie go isn't its special effects (which are not terribly good) but an intelligent story that you've never seen before, and that is brought to life with artistry.
It is not without flaw, as there are a few things left untied, it drags a bit during the last 20 minutes, and as mentioned, the effects are not top notch, but these negatives are greatly outnumbered.
