Review of Ginger Snaps (2000) by Jesse W — 08 Apr 2008
This is one of my favorite werewolf films. It's a not very traditional one, and uses the idea of turning into a beast because of repression in a fresh way. It's almost like if the celluloid for Heathers was bitten by a werewolf.
Puberty, growing up (or a refusal to) and teenage angst are combined with interesting cinematography and entertaining (and gory) effects to create a very well made independent horror film with a touch of melancholy.
I thought all the acting was great, even the surprising presence of Mimi Rogers. The predominantly younger main characters and a different approach to scares might turn of some horror fans but in a subgenre with almost no classics this is definitely worth a viewing.
The sequels weren't very good, although the werewolves in the third one were quite possibly the best I've seen.
