Review of Ginger Snaps (2000) by Paul R — 30 Jun 2009
This movie starts making it seem like the whole werewolf thing is going to be a metaphor for the changes that teenagers go through. Not a terrible choice, but I am glad that they abandoned it and made the movie more of a straightforward "What if there was a werewolf?" instead of a "This movie is about werewolves, but it's really about teenagers.
" The angst in the beginning of the movie isn't glorified the way it sometimes is, nor is it treated with mockery. It seems to be a straightforward, honest look at what high school is like. This isn't really what the movie is about, but it's important because it sets up the characters for the viewer and gives the viewer an emotional attachment to them.
Emotion is very important it this movie. The struggles that both Brigitte and Ginger go through are depicted in a very emotional way, which is really helped by the excellent acting. There are only a couple of issues I had with this movie.
In the encounter with the first werewolf, they don't want to show the viewer the werewolf because that would take away from the final scene, so they kind of do the Jaws thing, but the characters can clearly see the werewolf, so it kind of felt frustrating that they didn't give a good camera angle for more than a fraction of a second.
Also... if you're gonna play field hockey, and there's a dead dog in the field, you remove the dog before you start playing. Do you really expect me to believe that nobody noticed it? It's in an empty field!!!
