Review of Ginger Snaps (2000) by Marco S — 17 Feb 2010
So, the wolf effects are a huge pile of shite, and the werewolf aspect as a whole is shaky. I'm not completely up on my werewolf mythology, but I'm certain the visual aspect isn't supposed to begin until the full moon and is temporary. Here that isn't the case. Shortly after being bitten by a wolf Ginger begins to become more sexual, and begins to flaunt herself (you can see why the boys would like this film) but it becomes more dangerous as she becomes more and more animalistic and her physical appearance changes well before the full moon becomes a factor.
Thankfully it's not the special effects, or the updated mythology, that is the crux of this story. It's the relationship between sisters Ginger and Bridgette, and the effect that the changes Ginger is going through has on the pair. Basically, the werewolf part of this film is a big shiny metaphor for puberty... I'm just glad that everyone going through puberty doesn't turn into a crappy looking wolf creature and rip unsuspecting members of the community to shreds.
