Review of Ginger Snaps (2000) by Eightthirty . — 23 Jan 2012
Wow, for a shoestring budget and low-fi special effects, this is a great horror film, and one of the few werewolf films I can say I'd heartily recommend. The film details two troubled but close sisters (Katherine Isabelle and Emily Perkins) who experience the horrors that occur when one of them (Isabelle) is bitten by a werewolf and begins to turn.
I liked the way the film tied in feminine puberty as symbolic for the werewolf transformation and the whole film's teenage motif really worked. The film doesn't show a ton of effects, which was smart because the sparing use of it makes it feel more vibrant because this really is a film driven by story and performance.
This felt like a David Cronenberg werewolf movie directed by John Hughes. Its a film that certainly would be jarring to the mainstream, but I'd still rank it as among my favorite werewolf films and certainly one of the smarter ones.
