Review of Ginger & Rosa (2012) by Ainsley M — 21 May 2018
Ginger and Rosa is brought to life by Elle Fanning. Her performance is the best I have ever seen of her, but sadly, it is not enough to save this film. Aside from Fanning's character, everyone lacks a full story.
Aside from Ginger, Fanning's character, everyone is half written. Rosa, Ginger's best friend, is a complete high school girl cliché that is trying to have a new edgy but is failing miserably.
Ginger's parents fall short of any real explanation and the film fails to help show their full character. Ginger seems to be the only character fully developed, and the most connection with her is not through her dialogue, but rather the many close up shots of a silent Ginger, expertly preformed by Fanning.
The only other character who could have saved this movie was Bella (played by Annette Bening) an American who Ginger truly connected with and was the only adult who seemed to try to understand Fanning's character.
Unfortunately, Bening's role was far too small to have a real impact on the film even if she had a grand effect on Ginger. Although most of the characters were underdeveloped, parts of this film was absolutely stunning, and the amazing cinematography is good enough consider watching this movie.
