Review of Gimme the Loot (2012) by Roy S — 20 Apr 2013
Rarely have I found such a critically acclaimed movie to be so bad. There is not a single character I don't despise, much less like. The protagonists are petty criminals who commit their petty crimes to fund their graffiti and recreational drug habits (which of course are also petty crimes).
When they are not victimizing others (usually ineptly) they are themselves being victimized by other punks similar to themselves, or they are discussing their crimes/victimizations in a stream of incessant profanity.
"Charming," as one reviewer called them, but without the richly deserved sarcasm. I found them repulsive and am almost at a loss to why critics like this thing. One reason is that it was technically proficient, especially considering that it probably had almost no budget.
While that was generally the case, it is largely negated by the weak and amateurish acting. The second possible reason is that it is a fresh voice, fresh point of view, gives voice to the voiceless, blah blah blah.
Critics love to see things they haven't seen before, and if it has something to do with The Disenfranchised so much the better. It does have some merit as an anthropological artifact of a certain socioeconomic demographic, but there is absolutely no reason to romanticize the repugnant aspects of the NYC underclass shown here.
