Review of Gimme Shelter (2013) by Dane J — 28 Sep 2005
Seeing as how in the last year I went on a major Rolling Stones kick, I figured I owed it to myself to check it out. Besides that, I also have read Hunter S. Thompson's Hells Angels and he details the leader of the Hells Angels, Sonny Barger who was instrumental in beating up and possibly killing some of the concert goers.
It's an amazing film as it shows Rolling Stones performances back in 69 leading up to their free show at the Altamont speedway just out of San Francisco. Four people died, and the Rolling Stones had numerous problems trying to play the show.
The film alternates between the performances of Stones songs, some still unreleased at that time, and the planning of Altamont, mostly its about the live music though. If you enjoy most music, or dig the stones, or just like good movies, this is a great documentary.
Nothing to hard hitting, mostly it's in the video and the music, but you can really see the attitude of the time changing.
