Review of Gimme Shelter (2013) by Mick S — 16 Jul 2007
Perhaps too much popular emphasis is put on the murder (note to self: don't wear green to altamont) than the actual overall document which is essentially one of the most faithful depictions of both the end of the 60's and as a portrait of a band at the peak of their powers. The camerawork, peering and weaving through crowds never becomes intrusive, it uses long takes which act as meditations on the subject. Style is not substituted by rapid fire editing or camera tricks (read: the song remains the same, mtv/vh1). In this film the artist is the artist, and the resulting footage contains not only some of the most striking and powerful, but also wondferful candid moments. A true definition of Documentary Filmmaking.
Did I neglect to mention the music? Fuck me dead... Killer!
