Review of Gimme Shelter (2013) by Chris H — 22 Aug 2010
A happy coincidence got me watching this film. Bought a $3 dollar DVD player that had a Stones CD in it. From there, I was curious about the lyrics of some of the songs. Enjoyed various versions of Ruby Tuesday on YouTube, and came upon a good version of Wild Horses from the film. Had previously enjoyed some Maysles Bros. work with Grey Gardens, and determined to finally watch Gimme Shelter, in full. I really did enjoy seeing the Stones in concert, in Winnipeg, in the 90s.
Anyway, back to the film. Compared to Talking Heads, "Stop Making Sense," is very raw, dynamic, and real. Nicely portrayed the tail end of the '60s, full of idealism, yet shock. Interesting is the role of the Hell's Angels, who on one hand, are villains, but serve as protectors of the bands, against the fury of the "entitled" free-crowd.
Interesting character study. Reminded me, as well, of the 1979 tragedy in Cincinatti, owing to "rush" seating at a Who concert.
Might talk about it some more, if you get me going on it.
