Review of Gimme Shelter (1986) by Andy W — 09 Jan 2008
The Maysles won the documentary lottery ticket with this feature, at the expense of some hippie lives. By sending out many bolex cameras into the audience, the maysles brothers record what will later be considered the death of the free love movement.
The death of hippydom is contained within this stark film, and it is something that should be experienced by everyone. More than a right place, right time documentary, this film reaks of a postmodern sophistication that is the polar opposite of the maysles brothers previous work (like Salesman).
That being said, you get to witness an evolution both of the popular culture of the late 60's early seventies, but the departure of american documentary cinema from its previous direct cinema stance, to more of a progressive verite.
