Review of Gilda (1946) by Art S — 21 May 2011
Of course, Rita Hayworth is radiant here in Gilda, but vulnerable, desperate, wounded, reckless and the target of much nastiness from Glenn Ford (who hates her for some unknown past transgression that presumably ended their love affair) and from George Macready (who has "purchased" her with his tungsten/gambling wealth).
For whatever reason (perhaps the clear homoerotic subtext), both men are misogynistic, treating Gilda/Rita with disdain/objectification/hostility, and making enough slurs about women to make you wonder how burnt they must have been (or what other reasons there might be).
Perversely compelling.
