Review of Gilda (1946) by Snigdh J — 06 Aug 2011
In spite of the lame somewhat contrived climax Gilda is a must watch for noir fans. Lots of credit goes to a scorching Rita Hayworth who creates here probably the most memorable female fatale in form of Gilda. She almost lives the character through all the sleaziness, all the suggestive provocations & all the sexual tension it shares with Glenn Ford's character. Glenn Ford himself is an ideal foil for Gilda with the intensity he infuses in the character.Supporting cast match up too with a wealthy friend & husband who suggests layers of darkness that afflicts him...a wisecrack butler straight out from a Hitchcock film and a cop who just loves to hang around the night club as he finds it fascinating.
Watch it for the darkish tone it has, for it's typical biting noirish dialogues and above all for a sizzling Rita Hayworth.
