Review of Gigi (1958) by Hugo F — 11 Apr 2008
Just bought this and I am all the more satisfied to go on living when I hold pieces of art like this in my hand. I can see the average appreciation for this film is low and I can only ask to see the evidence from home movie collections that would lead the owners of such offensive and ghastly comments to such conclusions.
I suddenly see the face of repulsive Cousin Eddie spitting out that kind of poison. Now not having seen the Broadway play is just a misfortune we all must live with. I am sure it was as sweet as honey.
But here we cannot complain. If you cannot absorb the cultural subtletys of the period highlighted in the film or the visionary musical accompaniment because of its antiquated subject matter than by all means, go catch some 9 dollar crap down at those places they have the gall to call movie houses.
Caron is not dull, she is curious and innocent and quite the elegant lady. And why are people comparing musicals just because they have a female protagonist in overly exquisite costuming, that makes no sense.
