Review of Gigi (1958) by Rod A — 04 Aug 2008
This is a film about art direction (which is quite lovely). The plot, characters, and music are not at all compelling. Maurice Chevalier is quite satisfied with himself as a bon vivant, yet this stock character is tired.
Watching a musical in which most of the songs are presented with patter rather than singing is dispiriting. Mysteriously, this film won Best Picture. I much prefered Minnelli's "Meet Me in St.
Louis", so much more compelling stuff in that one.
