Review of Gigi (1958) by Cindy I — 27 Jun 2009
I realize that in many cases, musicals can be weak in plot. This one demonstrates better than most. I was waiting for something in the plot to grab my attention, and it happened around the 1 hour, 50 minute spot.
Too bad...the movie itself lasts less than two hours. It appears to be a film where the well to do have nothing better to do than impress each other by following the unwritten rules of their society. The music itself is.
..for the most part...uninspiring. The movie follows a plot not too different from another Lerner & Lowe work (My Fair Lady) where a character is taking lessons to fit into society. Unlike My Fair Lady where the movie makes a statement about this society, this movie tends to portray it as reality and almost approves of it.
The character of Maurice Chevallier's is a complete waste of time and does nothing but get in the way. The one truly redeeming moment..."I Remember It Well"...2 old pros of the theater/cinema showing how to do a tender, romantic moment without spoiling the mood.
One other comment...this film does show that Leslie Caron could act.
