Review of Gigi (1958) by Adrian B — 03 Jun 2010
So musically entertaining I found myself carried along from song to song without paying attention to much else. On second viewing, I realized this is a film about a young woman being groomed by her impoverished family to become a courtesan.
In the last few lines of the film she is saved from the fate of prostitution by a marriage proposal. Granted, the film is set in Paris of 1910, but still...how did this film with such questionable content win 9 Academy Awards in post-war America? Maybe the marriage proposal was enough to redeem it, or perhaps viewers went along for the lovely musical ride, from song to song without really thinking about it, just like I did.
