Review of Gifted (2017) by 'Michael S — 28 Apr 2017
This drama about an uncle's love and care taking for his niece who is a young math genius may bring familiar issues into debates but it is overall a sweet and charming storytelling that has something to tell and says it well.
It has a simple, straight forward and predictable plot structure, a sentimental story about a little girl trapped in between the custody battle of two adults at different perception, fast-paced and entertaining light drama as well as being an engaging film that avoids from being too much of tearjerker.
Other than the terrific supporting cast and choices of musics, It is great to see Evans without involving a superhero shield this time with his affective performance as a flawed father figure and together with Grace as his prodigious niece, both of them create a genuine and adorable father-daughter like relationship that definitely captivate the heart of audiences and emotional rewarding.
While the film is slightly let down by its generic beats and expected ending, its honest and inspiring approach does deliver its purpose and message - the meaning of family, people who love and protect you and only want the best for you.
