Review of Gifted (2017) by Chris F — 14 Jul 2017
Gifted is a fine indie drama but nothing more. The cast is really good in their roles. Chris Evans made a good lead, and I liked Octavia Spencer and Jenny Slate in their supporting roles. But the standout performance is the little girl (McKenna Grace).
She was excellent. Usually child actors aren't good, but she was great. The plot is fairly predictable, but engaging. I was invested for the most part the entire time. Sometimes, the film is overly sentimental.
Especially towards the end. The film gets too melodramatic, which takes you out of the story. Sometimes the emotional stuff works, and sometimes it doesn't. Overall, this is a well made and well acted indie drama.
It isn't amazing, and it's pretty predictable, but overall it was entertaining. I thought the film would be too melodramatic, but in the end I ended up enjoying it.
