Review of Giant (1956) by Matt D — 25 Apr 2008
There were many things I liked about this film-- but felt that, with such an enormous running time, there should have been more/better character development in general: For setting up most of the film with Hudson's character an unsympathetic one, the final twenty-or-so minutes spent trying to reverse it seemed strange, to say the least.
Dean acts well, but as with his other roles, at some point I feel he overdoes it [the scene with his drunken, wailing monologue.] The three children could have easily been condensed into one, and not nearly enough time was spent with Angel's character, unfortunately.
All in all a film that wants the viewer to care about characters without giving any strong reason to do so.
