Review of Giallo? (2009) by John P — 13 Jan 2010
Oh, how the mighty have fallen. As a life-long fan, it actually pains me to write these words butâ?¦Dario Argento should just stop making movies before he destroys the legacy of the masterpieces he created like 'Tenebre', 'Suspira' and 'Profondo Rosso'.
Everything since 'Opera' in 1987(!) has been an utter embarrassment and his latest 'Giallo' is no exception. What possessed Argento to make Giallo's serial killer ('Yellow') a bad Mark Knopfler or Sly Stallone clone, complete with a red sweatband around his head and a giant, Wicked Witch of the West nose? 'Yellow' (Yellow â?? Giallo, get it?) and his antics generate laughs not goose bumps.
Despite putting on his best straight face as both the tortured police detective hunting 'Yellow' and the killer himself, Adrien Brody, his goatee and chain smoking cannot save this sludge. Even the FX surrounding the meager kill/torture scenes are a letdown.
'Giallo' is as generic as they come. Instead of an homage to the genre, all we get is another reminder that perhaps Argento's best days are behind him.
