Review of Giallo? (2009) by Benjamin J — 11 Aug 2011
The massive mistake Argento always makes is to let his directorial innovation replace the need for a good script and solid performances. Adrien Brody is meant to be portraying a man driven to obsession by the murder of his mother, yet he just manages stumble through the grumpy New York cop schtick without any real enthusiasm.
Even though his scripts are normally sub-Hitchcock nonsense with a really unsuspected twist (unsuspected in this case means "really out of the blue with no logical connection to anything) this is normally overcome by the brilliant camerawork and lighting (see Tenebrae and Suspiria).
However, this doesn't even have any of that. There isn't even any decent gore, something else you can usually rely on from the man himself. A real disappointment.
