Review of G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra (2009) by Troy F — 29 Mar 2013

G.I. Joe: Rise Of The Cobra really is one of the most ridiculous, silliest popcorn action flicks of recent years. First off, it will never make sense to me why this is called G.I. Joe. Frankly, I never watched the classic TV show or whatever, but I know the look of it and this film barely qualifies as G.

I. Joe even with the modern update considered, why not call this something else? Oh well, I'll leave it be. On the one hand, the production is awfully corny with cheap-ass visuals that are rather uncontrollably laughable even if this film was going for the cartoonish look (no seriously, I wanted to burst laughing at many sequences).

On the other hand, the plot at least tried to do something interesting even if the results were very meh. The action can be a bit cutty and the finale is frankly boring, but some of the over-the-top action scenes can be entertaining for their ridiculousness.

You'll laugh AT it, you'll roll your eyes, you'll think "what the shit?" at many parts, but it can't be denied that there's a hint of dumb fun to be had here, and that's the most admirable thing I can say about this film.

But like I said, the lame visuals dominate most of the film, and it they get overused to an extent where the whole film just feels like a video game gone overly ballistic with action and eye candy, which became quite much for me even as an action fan.

Nonetheless, I've seen many summer popcorn flicks over the years and while this is certainly won't go down in my books as one of the better ones, it has admittingly outdone some other forgettable ones.

In short, not that great, but its alright, I kinda like it.
