Let's face it, this sort of fare was never going to appease the critics but was successful at the box office with its target audience - boys who love toys. And it's easy to see why.
'G.I. Joe' is a fast-paced caper with stylised action and fight sequences that impresses without overwhelming. (Interesting to note how many people get stabbed or impaled during these moments.).
The plot is easy enough to follow, the performances are fine (Channing Tatun is well-cast as the hero of the piece) and there's enough touches of humour to remind us that we shouldn't be taking this sort of thing too seriously.
A diverse range of characters, some with their own subplots, means that there's always someone to cheer for; personal favourites are Snake-Eyes (Ray Park) and Scarlett (Shana M. O'Hara).
Better than others based on iconic toys (think 2009's insufferable 'Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen'), when it comes to action-packed, popcorn-munching entertainment, 'G.I. Joe' doesn't disappoint.
