Review of G.I. Joe: Retaliation (2013) by Quincy J — 16 Apr 2014
I will unashamedly admit I loved the original. Yeah it was terrible, but good terrible. Individually, everything was just so bad, yet all came together into something so enjoyable. I really want to watch it again now.
This movie on the other hand is just terrible. It feel like the messy afterbirth after an already messy, but at least entertaining, delivery. Aside from some decent action and a very well done ninja fight sequence in the mountains, nothing else works. It is just so bland and by the numbers to the point where it becomes embarrassingly boring. And speaking of embarrassing, who the hell thought RZA's role was worthy of screen time. Wow!
This movie had at least promise and a second chance to do the G.I. Joe name justice. Instead, it is rather sad that the movie which endured all kinds of hell from the screenwriters' strike, ended up being more entertaining than the movie made under stable circumstances.
