Review of Ghosts of the Abyss (2003) by Michelle . — 26 Jun 2004
Ghosts Of The Abyss was another lucky discovery of mine. I didn't know what this movie's about, I just thought the title sounded good, so I got it. When I finally started watching it I found out it's a documentary of an underwater expedition to the sunken Titanic produced and directed by James Cameron.
I thought the blends of the pictures of Titanic nowadays and the re-produced movie material, photos and 3D-animations were quite well-done. I liked how they solved their goal. Though I thought the people involved talked a bunch of rubbish at times.
I do not need to know whether someone's a "nervous pisser" 2000 meters under water. One guy said he'd like to take some stuff of the Titanic with him and sell it on eBay. Considering they had robot cams and arms with them, I bet they did take something with them, though probably you wouldn't be allowed to sell it, I'm not sure.
The long time they spent rescuing one and then two of their robot cameras somehow was unnecessary in this movie, I think. It wasn't about the ship anymore suddenly. Then they switched to September 11th, because it all happened while they were making this film - and I don't know, somehow they lost focus of what they originally wanted to talk about.
At school I would have gotten an E for story-telling if this had been my story, because it missed the point at the end. But I liked the documentary, and it wasn't tiring to see yet another story about the sunken Titanic.
