Review of Ghosts of Girlfriends Past (2009) by Deb S — 15 Mar 2010
This movie follows the storyline of Dickens' 'A Christmas Carol' which everybody knows so you pretty much know exactly what is going to happen. Basically the movie is about a guy (Matthew McConaughey) who treats women like they are a piece of meat and does not believe in the institution of marriage and is afraid of commitment. (Most men will be able to relate to that lol) When he goes for his younger brother's wedding, he meets his original girlfriend, Jennifer Garner who doesn't want anything to do with him. Connor is on the brink of ruining the wedding when he gets a wake-up call from the ghost of his late Uncle Wayne played by Micheal Douglas, whose exploits Connor has modeled his lifestyle behind.
Uncle Wayne has an urgent message for his protégé, and tells him he will be visited by three ghosts (past, present and future) who will attempt to show him the error of his womanizing ways by taking him on a hilarious journey through a lifetime of failed relationships. Unless Conner changes his ways, he will end up alone with no one who loves him.
Did anyone notice the same girl Christa B. Allen (playing the younger version of Jennifer Garner's character in 13 Going on 30 and in Ghosts of Girlfriend's past are the same? Both characters' names are also similar: Jenna and Jenny. I thought Micheal Douglas was funny and Matthew McConaughey did too good of a job playing the sleaze-ball. Breklin Meyer as the groom was fine as well. Not a great film but somewhat touching with some memorable quotes.
Connor Mead: Someone once told me that the power in all relationships lies with whoever cares less, and he was right. But power isn't happiness, and I think that maybe happiness comes from caring more about people rather than less...
Uncle Wayne: It's all for your own good. And what's not for your own good is for my entertainment.
Connor Mead: Love is magic comfort food for the weak and uneducated!
