Review of Ghostbusters: Afterlife (2021) by Georgedelorean — 20 Nov 2021
I have now watched GBAL twice this week; once on Wednesday during the limited release, and last night (11/19) as well. Some are negatively criticizing the film as having too much nostalgia/fan service without focusing on other aspects of it. Obviously the premise of busting ghosts remains, however if it didn't, then it wouldn't be Ghostbusters, would it? While that premise is obviously needed, the story itself is excellent. While Egon's actions prior to the movie may have seemed extremely uncouth, his reasons were solid, and absolutely necessary. It is a pleasure to see how the new generation interacts with the previous, and indeed have their own chemistry among themselves, as well as how they interact with the originals.
While Ghostbusters in all of its original universe iterations are solid comedy, this one included, there are a few moments of true horror, though extremely brief, (read: jumpscares) that might be a bit much for young audience members. Mild discretion is advised on that account.
The music, while original, definitely plays appropriate homage to Elmer Bernstein's score. Just listen, and you'll be pleasantly surprised. Lighting and sound are fully on point without hesitation or reservation in thought. Special effects are obviously far more advanced in ease of execution than the original films, however aren't overdone or present for their own sake. Truly well done and deserving of appropriate credit for subtlety when needed. As for the comedy aspect, it's completely solid. While it may not have the easy, cerebral depth the original film had, the humor is entirely and completely solid without being hackneyed, stilted, or self-serving for its own cause. The times when you will laugh are hearty and out loud, though not overdone or bloated. There are also plenty of softer chuckle moments for those who enjoy them. All of the laughs in the film flow naturally from truly genuine humor, and make for an authentically entertaining film. If you're on the fence about seeing it, or are confused by the somewhat mixed reviews, be not afraid! It's a genuine film with its own heart and soul, fully deserving of the affection with which fans of the original universe franchise are so willing to give it.
