Review of Ghost World (2001) by Brendan S — 07 Jan 2009
I didn't like this movie. All of the characters were extremely weird (which is kind of the point I guess), making them unrelatable. It would have been nice if there was at least one character who was 'normal', who could be used to ground the film in reality and allow audiences to relate to it.
The first half of the movie was actually somewhat decent as it was set up as a comedy. Admittedly, the characterization fit (and indeed worked well) within this context.
The downfall of this film was that in the second half, they tried to make it a drama with real messages and themes behind it. This severe conflict in genre choice ultimately tore apart anything that this movie had going for it. I think it also causes the message and intent of the film to be lost (or at least discredited) for many people.
