Review of Ghost World (2001) by Lance R — 29 Jan 2009
I remember liking this bittersweet film about growing up (or not), searching for identity, expression, authenticity (even though I almost always feel only contempt for existentialist adolescent angst).
But my problem with it is: if riding the bus is meant as a metaphor for suicide, then this must seem drastic (hence the need for metaphor). But if not, and instead it's meant somehow to be taken literally, then it must seem fantastic/escapist.
Either way, the ending feels like a cop out.
