Review of Ghost World (2001) by Aaron B — 21 Apr 2010
This movie begs the questions of whatever happened to Thora Birch. Scarlett Johansson and Steve Buscemi have thrived, but the most delighting part of this movie hasn't done much of anything since. Thora Birch is the center of the film, and it's a testament to how well she holds it together that she's hard to like and hard not to like at the same time.
Kind of like this movie. Not much happens, and I didn't really like much of what did happen- depressing, grating at times. But by the end, I saw the point and appreciated the story Zwigoff had told.
It's pretty pertinent to my life just because I'm in college and trying to figure out what I'm doing with my life- I found comfort in the movie one, because my life has turned out far better than these people's, and two, because Zwigoff ends the movie with hope.
Ambiguous hope, sure, but there's almost an exhilaration in the ambiguity, in not knowing what's going to happen. If only we could approach that abstract idea of the rest of our lives with the same excitement.
