Review of Ghost World (2001) by Kyle F — 10 Dec 2011
Usually I see why movies are rated high even if they weren't my cup of tea. While this movie wasn't my cup of tea, I watched it with an open mind, for the hope that I would be surprised. After all I felt the same about American Beauty when I first saw it and that's one of my favorite movies of all time.
I was trying to establish or at least find the genius in this movie. Sadly, I couldn't find it. It was an average through-the-mill romantic flick, camouflaged only because instead of beautiful likable people, it was corky, bitter misfits.
If this movie wasn't about love, then I don't know why the point of the film was. After watching it, it felt as empty as a glass jar. There was no substance, no defined meaning, and the only thing that remotely came close to resemble anything of a form of art was the art class; however, that never really elevated throughout the film, instead becoming a jarring afterthought in what was the director's most important story in the movie - the relationship between Enid and Seymour.
