Review of Ghost World (2001) by Kyle G — 22 May 2012
A fine movie, a gender-reversed and much smarter version of Harold and Maude; but still, a little too intrusive and coyly thought-provoking.
GW and H+M share a smarmy liberal attitude, but the former is fortunately a little deeper than the latter, thanks to some sub-plots (record-collecting, an art class, an old racist ad campaign) to spice up the old "quirky mismatched romance" story. Also, Ghost World could have easily had a lazy voiceover, and I'm so glad they resisted this, since it would have made the smarmy flaws in the screenplay so much worse.
