Review of Ghost World (2001) by Meredith W — 02 Dec 2012
"Ghost World" tells the story of Enid (Thora Birch) and her best friend Rebecca (Scarlett Johannson), recent high school grads who scorn mainstream society, playing a joke on an eccentric loner Seymour (Steve Buscemi). But what begins as a joke leads into a quirky, engaging relationship between Seymour and Enid. Indeed, one of "Ghost World's" most powerful components is Enid and Seymour's friendship. These are two kindred spirits, oddballs to the rest of the world, who've found each other and identify with each other's misery, strangeness and lack of belonging. The catch is that he is double her age.
Steve Buschemi is wonderful in this role, however, Thora Birch, playing a similar character like that of "American Beauty", carries this movie. Certainly is not a movie for everyone, but I like it, especially it's witty, cutting dialogue.
